Fly casting instruction is one to four hours with no session longer than two hours. Classes over two hours will be conducted over two days. Includes instructional booklets and use of equipment.
The one hour class will provide a basic introduction to casting. The two hour class will provide the essential casting skills to go to the stream. The four hour class is intended to make the average beginner stream ready.

ONE DAY SCHOOL
Our Fly Fishing Schools are intended for beginning fly fishers. Children should be at least ten years old and must be accompanied by a parent or other adult. This is a full-day course from 8:00am to 4:30pm and includes instruction covering equipment, fly casting, knots, entomology, and fly selection. There will also be a 2-3 hour stream session in the afternoon. Equipment, handbook, and lunch are provided. Students much bring a hat and sunglasses.
This course is conducted at Trout & About headquarters on the Gunpowder River. School dates are scheduled as needed and a minimum of two students is required. Classes can be scheduled April through October.
Class size is limited to six students and two instructors.
Cost is $150.00 per person.
A deposit of $75.00 per person is required.
A Maryland freshwater fishing license with a Trout Stamp is required.
Family and group rates for three or more are available.
TWO DAY SCHOOL
Our Fly Fishing Schools are intended for beginning fly fishers. Children should be at least ten years old and must be accompanied by a parent or other adult. The two-day course includes the one-day school, plus a second day on the stream. .
Classes are scheduled as needed with a minimum of two people required. Classes can be scheduled April through October.
Class size is limited to six students and two instructors.
Day one includes all that is included in the one-day course.
Day two is conducted primarily on the stream and includes practical entomology, reading water, presentation and fishing techniques for nymphs, dry flies, and streamers. Each student will also have at least an hour of guided fishing from one of the instructors.
Equipment, wading gear and handbook are provided, as well as lunch on both days.
Students must bring a hat, sunglasses and appropriate clothing including rain gear.
A Maryland freshwater fishing license with a Trout Stamp is required.
Cost is $275.00 per person.
A deposit of $100.00 per person is required.
Family and group rates for three or more are available.
PERSONAL ON-STREAM SCHOOL
This personal school is conducted exclusively for each booking client(s) with a dedicated instructor. Maximum of two people and no mixed groups.
Each school is scheduled on an as needed basis, seven days a week, April through October, depending on instructor and client availability.
They are usually conducted on the Gunpowder River, but other streams may be available on request.
These personal schools cover the essential elements of the two-day school with emphasis on casting, reading water, and techniques for nymphing and dry fly presentations while fishing for trout.
The course includes all equipment, the Trout & About Fly Fishing School handbook, a copy of Phil Gay's instructional video "Practical Fly Casting", and lunch.
A Maryland freshwater fishing license with a Trout Stamp is required.
Cost is $275.00 for one and $400.00 for two. A deposit of $100.00 is required.
